A few words about the city of Ierapetra

Ierapetra is the most populous city of Lasithi Prefecture and the fourth largest in Crete. It is the seat of the Community and Municipality of the same name. It is located 95 kilometers southeast of Heraklion, 242 kilometers from Chania and 36 kilometers south of Agios Nikolaos. Previously, it was the seat of the province of the same name, which forms the largest part of the current Municipality of Ierapetra. At the 2011 census, the population of the city center was 12,355 people, while combined with the suburban settlements, the population of Ierapetra Community reached 17,710 people at the 2021 census.

In recent years it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Crete, attracting both domestic and foreign visitors due to its award-winning beaches (2nd European Beach Award). Its intense nightlife starts from the taverns and bars on the beaches and ends in the bars and clubs in the narrow streets of the city. During the summer months, the cultural events "Kyrveia" take place, with a rich program of concerts and theater performances.

Today it is the only urban center in southern Crete and functions as an important commercial center for the export of agricultural products to Europe. It is also the dominant financial and commercial center of Lasithi Prefecture.
