About the Moiress Location

Moires is a town in Southern Crete, in the plain of Messara, near Geropotamos. They are located approximately 38 kilometers southwest of Heraklion and have a population of 6,379 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census. The area has several schools, banks, KEP, post office, Health Center, Magistrate's Court, Police Station and a radio station. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture, but there are also businesses and commercial activities. There are many churches and temples in the area, such as the churches of Agios Georgios and Agios Myrons in Kappariana. In addition, the town is the seat of the Metropolis of Gortyn and Arcadia.

History of Moires

The history of this settlement probably begins during the Venetian period, when Peloponnesian refugees from Nafplio and Monemvasia founded the town. Although Moires is not mentioned in the censuses of the Venetian or Turkish occupation, the settlement is mentioned for the first time in 1881 with 83 Christian and 62 Turkish inhabitants. In 1925, it was officially designated as the seat of a newly founded community, and in 2010 it was separated from the municipality of Moira and designated as the seat of the municipality of Phaistos. In 2001, Kappariana was integrated into Moiras and became a settlement of it, which is located on the eastern side and at the 52nd km of the road to Tymbakki, at an altitude of 90 meters.
