Pitsidia is a village that belongs to the Municipality of Phaistos, Heraklion, Crete and is located near the sea of the Gulf of Messara.
Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in tourism, agriculture (cultivation of olive trees and vineyards for the production of wine), animal husbandry and fishing.
In Pitsidia there is a kindergarten and a primary school, as well as an equestrian center that organizes excursions to nearby beaches and other areas.
Moreover, there are many holy temples in the village.
The Community of Pitsidia also includes the settlements of Matala and Kalamaki.
The History of the village of Pitsidia
The village is the oldest in the area and is called Pitsidia because of the soldiers of Nikiforos Phokas who settled there.
These soldiers came from Pisidia in the south of Asia Minor and gave the name of their country to the village.
The inhabitants of Pitsidia were also famous for their bravery and according to tradition, they exterminated the Triamates in Skillohori.
Pitsidia refers to the historian Stergios Spanakis and was called Pizzidhia in 1583, while today it is called Kastrophylaka with 89 inhabitants.
